What are Custom Orthotics?
Many people picture insoles or shoe inserts when they hear the word “orthotics,” but Custom Orthotics are so much more: They’re actually considered medical devices, and they’re designed to address a number of health issues. At Massage Addict, using 3D scanning technology, Custom Orthotics are designed and tailored specifically for you and your needs to provide support and alignment for your feet, ankles, and lower legs which can alleviate the specific pains that you are feeling.
How do Custom Orthotics help me?
A consultation with one of our Doctors of Chiropractic will help determine if Custom Orthotics are right for you. If your pain is related to an orthopedic condition, orthotics may help to improve your comfort, mobility, and quality of life.
Custom Orthotics, when worn correctly and inserted into your shoes, can treat the following conditions:
- Flat feet
- Pronation of foot
- Supination of foot
- Plantar fasciitis
- Heel pain
- Heel spur pain
- Arch pain
- Sprained ankle
- Shin splints
- Ball of foot pain
- Bunions
- Swollen ankles
- Knee pain
- Leg length discrepancies
- Lower back pain
- Custom Orthotics can also help with pain and symptoms related to arthritis, and diabetes.
Custom versus store-bought orthotics
You can buy generic orthotic insoles at the drugstore, but they’ll likely be too soft to correct your specific issue. Using 3D scanning technology, Custom Orthotics are moulded specifically for your feet, from a semi-rigid material, to provide the support you need to get relief.
The good news is that, similar to other therapeutic treatments, many extended health care benefit plans include coverage for Custom Orthotics, usually up to a maximum of $500 annually.
How the Process Works
- Find out your coverage through your insurance provider. It is usually coverage of a specific amount each year or every two years.
- Find out under your policy if a Chiropractor can dispense orthotics. It is important to use the word “dispense”. If it does not specifically say a Chiropractor, call or contact your insurer to be confident that a Chiropractor is able to dispense so that you will be reimbursed.
- If you require a medical doctor prescription, you can obtain this prior to coming to your orthotic assessment or the Chiropractor can fill out a form that can be signed by your medical doctor. See steps below.
- Please note we do not direct bill for this service. It is self submit.
Next Steps
If you have a prescription for Custom Orthotics:
Book an orthotic assessment where we will help you determine the best custom orthotic for you. We’ll place your custom order after your assessment.
If our team has recommended Custom Orthotics:
Get assessed by one of our Licensed Chiropractors who will write you an assessment and orthotic recommendation. Check with your healthcare insurance plan to see if your prescription needs to be signed by your family doctor prior to placing an order.
Ensuring the Perfect Fit for Your Custom Orthotics
Once your Custom Orthotics arrive at the clinic, we’ll contact you to book an appointment where we’ll help make sure they are fitting you just right. Before you take your Custom Orthotics home, you’ll also receive some helpful information on what to expect and proper care tips.
Break-In Period and Modification Options
Your Custom Orthotics will have a break in period of about two weeks. Modifications can be made if necessary, at the end of your break in period.
Custom Orthotics FAQ
The more you wear your Custom Orthotics, the more you’re likely to notice a reduction in pain and discomfort. For people with specific daily activities (like running or playing a certain sport), it’s even worth having a second set of orthotics designed for that activity.
It takes time to get used to Custom Orthotics—and this makes sense when you think about it. The job of the orthotic is to realign the structure of your foot, but your foot has been used to being out of position for a long time. This correction may lead to pressure in some areas as the orthotic begins to work.
The only caveat for selecting a pair of shoes is that they must have removeable insoles. You need to be able to remove the insole that comes with a pair of shoes so you can wear your Custom Orthotics instead.
No, your Custom Orthotics won’t reduce muscle tone. In fact, because they’re training your feet and legs to use the right muscles more efficiently, your body may actually feel less fatigued.
Custom Orthotics can also help in the following ways:
- Provide pain relief for conditions that affect the lower limbs
- Treat orthopedic injuries
- Address biomechanical anomalies
- Redistribute internal and external forces
- Improve balance
