What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic Care uses a number of non-invasive approaches to treat issues and disorders with the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems, with a particular focus on the spine. Under the care of a Doctor of Chiropractic (commonly referred to as a Licensed Chiropractor or Chiropractor), treatments can help with everything from the following:

  • Acute and chronic back and neck pain
  • Migraine headaches
  • Other types of pain and strain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Sciatica
  • And more…

How can Chiropractic Care help me?

After understanding your specific concerns, a Licensed chiropractor will determine a course of treatment without the use of medication or surgery. They may use manipulation, soft tissue therapies, rehabilitation exercises and more.

How long are the appointments and what does a typical chiropractic treatment consist of?

Your first visit will be an assessment, and will be scheduled for approximately 45 minutes.  During the assessment, the Licensed Chiropractor will ask you questions about your symptoms and health history. The Licensed Chiropractor will also complete an evaluation to identify potential issues with your spine, muscles, joints or nervous system. The evaluation may include tests to analyse your posture and movement, along with a hands-on evaluation of motion—specifically how your spine moves in alignment with the rest of your body. The Licensed Chiropractor will then explain the diagnosis and recommended treatment plan.

We recommend you wear comfortable clothes for your Chiropractic Care appointments.

The follow-up visits will be scheduled for 15 or 30 minutes* where the Licensed Chiropractor will provide treatments according to the plan discussed during your assessment.

* Note that the treatment time listed is the maximum time length and actual treatments, based on your specific therapeutic need and treatment plan, may be shorter.

FAQ's

A:Your Licensed Chiropractor will provide you with a recommendation of treatment tailored to your specific needs. Each case is different, but it’s common for a client to need four to six follow-up treatments. Some people make it a priority to see a Licensed Chiropractor on semi-regular basis (which varies from once a month to twice a year, depending on the person) in order to stay ahead of minor misalignments. You can also just book treatments when you feel a need arise.

A: Many extended insurance plans do include coverage for therapeutic services like Chiropractic Care. Check your policy for the yearly allowance you are allotted.

A: Chiropractic Care is usually safe during pregnancy, but when in doubt, ask your midwife, obstetrician or primary care physician.

On average 30 pounds is gained during a pregnancy, with most of it carried in the abdomen. This puts significant strain on the pelvis and back. Licensed Chiropractors can help to reduce this pain and increase overall function, as well as provide exercises to help prime your body for childbirth. Chiropractic Care can also help with postpartum recovery, shortening the rehabilitation time your body needs to heal after the baby arrives.

A:It is a seven-year course of study to become a Licensed Chiropractor in Canada. Candidates must first complete a minimum three-year degree at a recognized university, or graduate from a CÉGEP health science program in Quebec, followed by completion of a three- or five-year program at one of two accredited chiropractic colleges in Canada. This extensive education includes clinical, hands-on experience under the guidance of a highly qualified supervisor, as well as rigorous licensing exams, before a Licensed Chiropractor can begin practicing.

A:Massage therapy is a full body treatment that helps ease the pain related to muscle tension, injury recovery, stress relief or the need for relaxation. Common massage treatments include Swedish, Deep Tissue, Hot Stone, Prenatal, Sport and Trigger Point.

Acupuncture involves the placement of thin needles that are hand-inserted into specific acupoints to access your body’s meridians to help relieve pain and improve your overall well-being.

Chiropractic Care most often uses hands-on spinal manipulation and other alternative treatments. Proper alignment of the body's musculoskeletal structure, particularly the spine, will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication.

Reflexology involves applying pressure to specific reflex zones in the feet or hands to help energize the body, relieve tension and promote relaxation.

A:Variations in time utilized by Chiropractors at follow up appointments are to be expected and will vary according to a Chiropractor’s specific approach to practice, your specific treatment needs, or the specific condition being treated.

For instance, during a 15-minute follow-up treatment, one client might simply need an adjustment, wrapping up the treatment within minutes. Conversely, another client's needs might necessitate the full 15 minutes to address their condition effectively.

So, the treatment time identified at booking is the maximum appointment time allotted, and actual treatments, based on your specific therapeutic needs and treatment plan, may be shorter.
